One of the natural downsides of pregnancy is weight gain, and it is very common that that weight is retained even after the baby is born. Some women still look like they are several months pregnant after giving birth, and it can be difficult for a lot of them to deal with the weight issue. Now what makes it even more difficult is seeing the media splash images of celebrities in Hollywood emerging from giving birth as if they were never pregnant to begin with. In all the hue and cry, it's very easy to forget the concept of air-brushing which every celebrity mother not only goes through before images are shown, but also probably demands.
It is not easy to lose weight after giving birth. It is important to keep in mind that you gained all of this weight gradually over a nine month period and that you should give yourself time to gradually lose this weight. Instead of being hard on yourself, and making things difficult for both yourself and your baby, understand that it could take a couple of months to lose it all. It is also essential that new mothers understand that one of the worst possible steps they can take after having a baby is to start dieting.
If you are planning to breastfeed then you should know that the amount and quality of breast-milk is completely dependent on the food and drinks you consume. The good news is that if you breastfeed your baby, you are substantially increasing your post-pregnancy weight loss. Breastfeeding makes your body burn up to an extra 500 calories a day, thus helping to lower your weight. Keep in mind that these extra calories are burned only because your body needs the additional energy to feed your baby, so you have to eat accordingly. Restricting your diet and losing too much weight is dangerous, most of all because it can often result in toxins being released into breast-milk.
You can, however, try certain other things to lose post-pregnancy weight. Cut out any alcoholic and carbonated drinks from your diet and instead try to take in at least eight glasses of water a day. Water has zero calories so you save many calories this way. Resist any urge to snack on fast food or chocolate. Instead go for something that is not only healthy but will make you feel full, like an apple or banana. Plus, when you feel ready, start doing some light exercise. It doesn't have to be anything drastic; regularly walking will do you a lot of good, and you can enjoy the outdoors with your baby too.
