Alcohol consumption has always been a very
controversial subject. Firstly, there are studies that said moderate
drinking enhances your health. Yet, there are other arguments that
drinking is definitely not part of a healthy lifestyle. This leads to a
question, even if moderate drinking is really good for health, how much
is considered moderate? And when people started drinking, will they
really drink moderately? To say that alcohol and weight loss are
related lead to even more controversy.
So, is alcohol and weight
loss really related? Or does alcohol consumption lead to weight gain
instead (as in beer belly)? Well, the truth is there is a group of
people who lose weight from alcohol consumption. Yet, there is also
another group of people who gain weight instead. So, it seems that both
arguments are equally valid, isn't it?
Let us look at some probable reasons why alcohol leads to weight loss or weight gain.
1) How alcohol leads to weight gain?
Well,
when drank in small amount, alcohol may improve our appetite. As a
result, we tend to eat more. Eating more means more calorie consumption
which of course lead to weight gain.
2) How alcohol leads to weight loss?
For
heavy drinkers or alcoholics, the situation may be entirely different.
When too much alcohol is consumed over a short period of time, it may
affect your appetite. It is not abnormal for alcoholics to choose beer
instead of a nutritious meal. In more extreme cases, an alcoholic may
choose to spend all his money on more beer instead of food. This in
turn leads to weight loss. Hey, if you are trying to lose weight, this
is definitely not the way to go.
To conclude, if you want to lose
weight, try to abstain from alcohol, especially when you first started
on a weight loss program. If you love to drink, try to do so
moderately. By moderately, I mean drink once in a while, probably once
per week.(Not moderately everyday. Drinking daily can become a habit
that is hard to correct) Weight loss through alcohol consumption is
unhealthy.
