Dealing With Your Skin During Winter
By Val McQueen

There are few places in the world where dealing with winter weather is not a problem. Those people have other issues, but yours is your reaction to the cold and changing weather that your skin has to contend with. It's the back and forth of warm and cold that dries you out.

Lips: There are actually a couple of things you can do to keep your lips moist in the cold. And then there's the one thing you shouldn't do: That is lick your lips.

Licking your lips simply encourages them to dry out even more. The real trick to moist lips is lip balm. Unlike saliva, lip balm seals in the moisture and protects your lips from the changes around them.

Face: It is important to use moisturizer all year long, but it becomes especially important in winter. You may want to even consider consulting with a specialist before you settle on a facial moisturizer. They can give you a precise measure of what your particular skin type needs.

Hands: Quick factoid: Did you know that nowhere on your body is your skin thinner than on your hands? It's true. And that is why is so important to protect that skin in winter.

Of course, using a good moisturize is essential, but there are things you could be doing beyond just that. For example, if you need to wear thick wool gloves to stay warm, put on a pair of cotton gloves underneath to prevent itching. Also, doff the wet gloves altogether.

Feet: The wetter the socks, the worse they are for your dry, dry skin. Simply get out of wet socks as soon as possible. Also, if you are in the habit of wearing boots, your feet may need a little extra care in the form of exfoliation to get off the dead skin and let the moisturizer do its job down there.

And here are a few extra special tips to round things out. If you use a heater, that takes moisture out of the air around you. So you should use a humidifier to put the moisture back in. Also, you should use sunscreen to protect your skin during the winter. The UVA and UVB rays are just as dangerous, perhaps even more so given that you are not paying attention to them.

Cold packs and heating vents help you manage temperature at home.
