Three Steps to Eliminating Overwhelm
By Georgia Feiste

Over the last several days, I have talked to a number of people who are in a state of overwhelm. Some because they were part of a reduction in force, and are having difficulty finding a job. Some because they are starting a new business, and don't know the steps they need to take to get it going. Others are in jobs they either don't care for, or they are trying to do the work of multiple people - because of a reduction in force that didn't account for all the work left for those remaining - and they are having difficulty balancing all the different aspects of their daily lives.

Because each situation is unique, and the ultimate outcome is different for each person, I won't address that piece of the puzzle here. What is similar is the feeling of being overwhelmed with their circumstances. Here are a few things my clients have told me work for them to just stop that out of control, spiraling feeling they are experiencing throughout the day.

If you like to write, get yourself a notebook and start a gratitude journal. Write down three to five things you are grateful for each day. It doesn't have to be fancy or long, just meaningful.

Make sure you are getting enough physical activity. Sitting in front of a computer all day builds up stress in the muscles and joints. If your body doesn't get enough refreshment by stretching and being active, you will begin to have trouble sleeping, and generally will not feel good about yourself.

Spend some time in reflection, and enjoy the quiet time between you and your higher power. Quiet your mind and let it relax, along with your body. Concentrate on your breathing and try not to think of anything else. If a thought comes your way and your mind takes off, just take note of the thought, and come back to concentrating on your breathing. You may only be able to do this for a couple of minutes at first. That is okay, don't fret! Just quiet yourself 4-5 times each day. Over time, increase the time you spend doing this to 10-15 minutes once or twice a day. When done on a regular basis, my experience has been that creativity increases and possibilities begin to open up.

These are vital steps for getting rid of that feeling of panic that comes with being overwhelmed. When you are calmed, spend some contemplating your standards of integrity and your life priorities. When you are ready to start setting goals for moving forward, your motivation to complete them will be much higher if they are supported by your values and intentions.

Does that feel better?

Other avenues to relaxation are massage, getting a pedicure, getting your hair done, or playing basketball with your "buds." What do you do to relax and clear your mind of anxiety and stress?
Let's share so others might benefit.
