Stress Out Stress Itself
By Michael K Wong

I'm trying to think of something interesting to write about, something original.

I wanted to write something self-help, like a piece about how to improve your life, but what do I know about improving my life. My life is far from perfect.

I don't mean to sound emo, I just mean I don't feel I'm qualified to teach people how to improve their lives.

Something funny happened to me today though.

I was driving to work and I looked at my odometer. It read 65,003 kilometres and then I looked up at my windshield and I saw that sticker which said "next maintenance at 65,000 kilometres."

Then I started stressing out because I remembered that 65,000 kilometres is when you have to bring your car into the shop to do this big maintenance and it would cost a lot.

And then I caught myself.

Just as I was about to start getting depressed, I said out loud-

"Yeah, it's going to cost a million dollars!"

I started to smile because I know it wasn't going to cost me a million dollars, probably only three hundred dollars. Yet, by exaggerating the amount I was able to put things in perspective and see that it was going to cost only $300.

Now $300 is still $300, but when your mind starts stressing out about something, it can warp and change things so that $300 may seem like...well...a million dollars.

By saying it out loud, I was able to remind my mind to just chill. Maintenance is a part of owning a car and there's no use in complaining about it. Just grin and bear it.
