Stress Management Strategies - 5 Natural Ways to Manage Stress
By Shannon E Cook

Stress is a factor in many people's lives in our fast paced society. The pressure to achieve and excel on various fronts can be intense and difficult to manage. With so many areas of life placing demands on our emotional, mental, and physical selves, it is important to take some time and effort for yourself, for managing the impact of stressors before they get out of hand and begin to manifest in undesirable ways such as physical illnesses. Here are 5 natural ways to manage the stress of everyday living:

1. Eat healthy foods. Focus on eating fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Reduce or eliminate highly processed foods and refined sugars. If you find yourself stressed out the point of not eating regular meals or enough food, try carrying around snack foods and eating mouthfuls throughout the day. If you tend to overeat when stressed, try setting as time to stop eating at night, and don't eat while you are distracted by something, i.e. the television.

2. Take vitamins and supplements as appropriate. Fish oil, and a food based multivitamin are a good start for most people. A naturopath can help you determine what the best supplement "cocktail" for you is based upon your particular needs and health history. If you suffer from anxiety feelings, L-Theanine is a good amino acid supplement that can relieve anxiety in many people.

3. Exercise regularly and use it as a "prescription" for mental well being. It has other side benefits such a overall physical health and better body image, but it can also be specifically used as a mood enhancer and stress reliever. Try to work a doctor approved cardiovascular focused program and work out regularly, up to about 45 minutes 5 times a week.

4. Talk things out if you feel overwhelmed. A professional counselor who specializes in your areas of concern can be a valuable asset to your support team. Friends and family can also help provide you with the emotional support that will ease your feelings of isolation and stress.

5. Practice small acts of kindness upon yourself. Make a list of small activities or indulgences you truly enjoy. Each day choose one item off the list and commit to doing it for yourself. You are sending yourself the message that you are worth the care and concern.
