Relieving Stress During Sickness
By Brandon A Leen

A very stressful time for the family can be when a family member becomes ill due to a chronic or terminal illness. The entire experience of having a family member in the hospital can be frightening. Hospital patrons usually feel like they are in a constant void of information and of course feel like they do not know what may be going on with their loved ones. Many find the myriad of technical terms and tests to be a daunting challenge when it comes to doing what is best for their loved ones during a stressful situation like an illness. How can one relieve stress during a time of illness in the family?

Take charge of the situation. Most success stories of individuals and families beating illness comes when the person takes charge of their health situation. Staying on top of treatments, recommendations, and new therapies can make a world of difference in both the quality of care one receives and also the success rates of beating diseases. Stress often can come from feeling disconnected from your treatment or the treatment of a loved one. Taking charge and being in control of the situation can alleviate much stress when it comes to illness.

Involve family and friends. Odds are better that a disease will be beaten if the individual or family member leverages social ties. Humans are social. We operate much better if we have positive individuals around us to help us through difficult situations. Allow family members to be a part of your treatment and help in ways they can. It will make you or your ailing family member feel much better and lower stress levels of the family in general.

Keep a positive attitude. Some have said that the single most important factor besides getting the right treatment is having a positive attitude. A tremendous number of studies and facts underscore the power of keeping a positive attitude and not losing hope. The mind can be a powerful weapon against many physical ailments. Keeping a positive attitude will increase the likelihood of being victorious over an illness and also helps to eliminate stress associated with chronic illnesses for both family members as well as the ailing individual.

Stress during illness can be a tremendously difficult situation. Many feel lost, hopeless, and without options when they are at the mercy of physicians and hospitals. However, there are many practical ways one can experience the least amount of stress possible under those circumstances. Taking charge of the situation, involving family and friends, and keeping a positive attitude works wonders to keep stress at a minimum as well as benefit the ailing individual and family.
