Manage your stress, don't let it manage you.
I know a lady who operates at a high-stress level every day. Even her sleep is stressful as her mind runs all night trying to plan out what she needs to take care of the next day, causing her dreams to be fitful. I often wonder what kind of a toll this is taking on her long-term physical and mental health.
Stressful situations are a part of everyday life. The trick is to manage your stress so that it doesn't manage you. Un-managed stress takes a toll on your body, weakening your immune system and making you more susceptible to disease. It takes a toll on your mind, causing depression and anxiety. It raises your blood pressure and causes toxins to be released into your system.
How can you minimize the stress in your life?
- Don't sweat the small stuff. Learn when to fight your battles and when to let them go. Don't let the little things consume you.
- Exercise is a great tension and stress reliever. Moderate exercise at just 20 to 30 minutes a day can make a world of difference in your physical and mental health.
- Learn to let go of resentments, disappointments, and bitterness. They only eat away at you inside.
- Channel your anger. Anger is a natural emotional response, but temper it and get over it.
- Get a hobby. Participate in a recreational activity at least once per week. Remember the saying about 'all work and no play?'
In short, get a grip. Life's short enough without letting stress shorten it even further.
When you wake up in the morning make up your mind that it's going to be a good day and act accordingly.
