Defuse the Stress Time Bomb
By Doug Setter

When you think that you are going to "blow a gasket," take some time out to de-stress your situation. Without drugs or psycho therapy, you can control your stress through three manageable factors: sleep, nutrition and exercise.

Sleep should be undisturbed. It is better to get a short, undisturbed sleep than hours of tossing and turning. To do this, get a dark, quiet area on a good mattress. Even a soldier knows to spend the extra few minutes making a comfortable area in the bush to ensure a better sleep. For some reason, some people would rather spend tens of thousands on a new car before they spend a few hundred on a good bed. Just think of where you spend about 1/3 of your life.

Food should be eaten in a relaxed atmosphere if possible. High protein foods and fresh fruits and vegetables supply the body with nerve fuel. Avoid or minimize anything with white flour or white sugar. The white flour causes allergic reactions in most people and forms a paste in your intestines. This leads to constipation, indigestion, gas and difficulty in absorbing nutrients with the intestines. Sugar, in all of its forms, cause irregular levels of blood sugar, mood swings and depletes the body of minerals. When minerals like calcium are low, the nerves starve and become "frayed."

EAT MORE OF:
Fresh vegetables
Beef, chicken, fish or eggs

EAT LESS OF:
Starchy, empty foods like pastries, candies and white flour products.
If you do eat these foods, eat them AFTER some good protein and NEVER eat sweets before bedtime as the sugar will inhibit your immune system.

TRY THE FOLLOWING SUPPLEMENTS:
Multi-B vitamins (Must contain B1, B2, B3 and B12)
Calcium-magnesium
Zinc

A daily cup of St. John's Wort herb tea can help. However, watch for hyper-sensitivity to sunlight.

Lastly, exercise regularly to "let off some steam." It is difficult to worry or "stress-out" during physical training.
