Coping With Stress and Ways to Manage It
By Erik Heyl

Everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives. It takes a toll on everyone. Family issues, illnesses, money troubles, problems at work, you name it, it's out there, everywhere.

Sometimes stress can be avoided. For example, you can learn to manage your money more effectively by sticking to a budget. You might want to discuss problems with your mate, boss, children or a trained counselor to help cope with issues with family and work.

Some stress is unavoidable as when a loved one becomes seriously ill, gets divorced or moves away.

However, there are ways to deal with stress in a positive way. As I mentioned, you can use talk therapy, especially with an unbiased counselor to get some perspective on your stress. You may be perceiving your stress as so formidable that you feel there is no end or possible positive outcome. If you get some feedback from someone who is not emotionally involved with you, you may get a different point of view that you have not otherwise been aware of. Suppose your child needs serious surgery. All you can think about is what can go wrong, how she may deal with it, what if the "worst" happens? You can work yourself up into such as frenzy that you no longer think rationally. An outside counselor may say, "Look, you've done your job as a parent. You're child was ill and you sought out all possible treatment options. After thinking it over and discussing it with your spouse, finding the right surgeon and asking all your questions, it's now time for surgery. Everything will be fine. You trust the doctor, hospital, etc." It may take some time, but eventually you realize, your child will be alright and probably is coping better than you are.

In addition to talk therapy, getting involved in something you love is a great distraction and very healthy for you mentally. Whether it be a daily walk, exercise, music, films or a hobby, most people benefit from some sort of activity outside of work and home life. Even a simple walk at lunchtime makes you feel better for the rest of the workday. It really does work. Try it. You have nothing to lose. Just walk around the parking lot or a nearby park, if you have time. A hobby is a great way to immerse yourself in another world. It can be reading books, building models, bowling, anything. It doesn't matter what. Some activities that involve others are also good for you mentally such as being on a team or in a book club.

Of course, this won't make your stress magically disappear. But, it will help you cope day to day and that is what it is all about.
