Healthy boundaries are very important for both adults and children. But sometimes, things that happen in childhood affect a person's way of life negatively. Well, a person can grow up having no healthy boundaries with him or her because of negative events like child abuse.
Now, what can you do in order to conquer the attitude of having no healthy boundaries? Well, first of all, you have to know that this lack of boundaries is a defense mechanism developed in childhood to protect the self from pain and hurt. In a way, although it grew up to be a negatively affecting element, it did serve a purpose in its own way.
The first step to having healthy boundaries is to fight the feeling and the belief that as a person you are worth nothing. As a person, you could have been led to this kind of thought because it makes you feel that there is no need to resist any kind of abuse-because anyway you do not have any worth to defend.
How can one overcome this belief or feeling? For many people, a religion and a good spirituality uplifts the person into believing that he or she is indeed worth. Well, as a start, you must remember that you are a human being-and that the fact you "are" indeed speaks something about your worth. Ask for help from trusted friends, professionals or family members to totally overcome this self negating belief.
The second step to having healthy boundaries is to see that love should be the motivating factor why we have to have healthy boundaries. We do not build healthy boundaries because we are afraid. We may be tempted to think that setting aside one's boundaries is always a charitable thing to do. But this may not be the case. It is good to explore your own motivation. See if your "good" kind of tolerance or forbearance for people is really out of love or simply because you are afraid of getting hurt. Maybe you are simply afraid to lose the sense of peace that currently exists among your relations. It is possible that this is just a false peace-the kind of "peace" that simply is the absence of conflict, a conflict that may even be needed.
Well, there are many different situations when it comes to boundaries. But always remember they are important to live a healthy, productive life.
