How to Prevent Swine Flu Infection
By Mary Cascio

Swine flu otherwise known as H1N1 has been a big concern for many people this year. This virus has been spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses have spread. Like many other diseases it is so much better to prevent the swine flu than to treat it. Here are some steps that you can do to prevent spreading the virus or contracting it.

Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. If possible use a Kleenex or tissue. Tissues can help trap germs so they don't spread. Make sure you throw the tissue in the trash when you are finished. Swine flu appears to be transmitted in the same fashion as the common cold so it is important to avoid touching your face, nose or mouth too frequently with your hands.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds. Swine flu can be contracted by touching objects that are contaminated by the virus so make sure that your hands are clean as often as possible.

Use hand sanitizers. Alcohol based hand sanitizers offer some limited protection in preventing swine flu infections. It wouldn't hurt to carry around a small bottle of hand sanitizer to use in times where you can't readily wash your hands.

Empower your immune system by getting enough sleep every night. Also make sure that you are drinking plenty of water and keeping your body hydrated. A healthy diet rich in antioxidants and vitamin C will also keep your immune system healthy and prevent the swine flu from taking you down.

If the swine flu is prolific in your area then it is important to avoid large public gatherings. Avoid places that are indoors and have poor air circulation. Instead of going out to eat or going to a movie theater to watch a movie opt to stay home and do these activities in an environment that is less likely to house the virus.

On a more extreme side if you are very concerned about the virus and want to go all out then you may choose to wear a face mask to help filter the air that you are breathing. Respiratory masks do offer some sort of basic protection and barrier against infection.

If you start to feel ill with cold or flu like symptoms stay home from work or school. Start home remedies to treat cold and flu like symptoms and if your condition worsens seek medical care from your health provider. It is important to limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Sometimes it is hard to call out sick to work or stay home from school because you don't want to get behind but it is best to stay home and heal and to keep the virus away from your peers.

By taking the proper steps you will give yourself a better chance of avoiding the swine flu, staying healthy and not infecting others.
