Hair Extensions Explained
By Jason Gibson Parsons

In the 1980s, hair extensions were started and discovered. Back then, they were extremely low in quality and the price tag that came with them was hefty. Until a few years ago, people had given up and forgotten about hair extensions for a while. As soon as celebrities started hitting the red carpet with them, they all of a sudden became the trend again and everyone is getting them nowadays.

Known as clusters of hair, hair extensions can be either clipped or glued to your scalp. Doing this, they allow for more height, volume, and length. Small clusters which consist of 30 strands, are used to place permanent extensions on and these small clusters are attached to the scalp. Strands of hair that are bigger are called wefts and are attached to the top of the head and are more free to flow. The best type of hair extension is the hand made kind and even though they will be a bit pricier, the quality of them is far more better and worth it in the end.

There are two types of hair extensions, human hair and synthetic hair. The human hair type is more expensive, but it looks natural rather than fake. You can ask that your extensions be pre-colored to your choice and they can also be highlighted or permed. Once they are attached, they can last about 6-8 weeks. After then they will need to be applied again. The reason for this is because our hair grows and the extensions need to be refreshed to improve the look of your hair. There is also permanent hair extensions, but they need to be replaced every 4 months or so.

There are many different types of extensions and they range from clip-in extensions, which are attached to a small comb like plastic piece and slid into place. Weft extensions are long and several inches that are attached onto a track and are applied in larger pieces to the scalp. Strand by strand types are applied to individual sections of your natural hair. This is the method that most people use to add volume as well as length.

Hair extensions require a lot of care and attention. You need to take care of it in a delicate way, more than you would with your own hair. They need to be washed when they start to stink. Both synthetic and human hair need to be washed with a mild shampoo and then followed by a conditioner. Use your fingers to get any knots or tangles out and towel dried.
