Three Parts to a Successful Exercise Program, With Or Without a Diet

Exercise and dieting can just be boring and too hard.  On the other hand, you can start with only one at a time, either exercise or dieting.  Then it won't be so overwhelming. 

Let's say for now dieting will be on hold.  Let's focus on exercise. Any goal is easier when you break it up into smaller parts.

To begin an exercise program, you should know about 3 components of a successful program.  Follow these 3 components, and you'll be better able to stick with it. You'll be doing it the safe way.  No tricks, no shortcuts, no magic machines.  Such tricks will only leave you more discouraged than you were before you started.

So here are the 3 components:

  1. Build muscle strength - Move your muscles against the force of gravity.  It eliminates flab.  You need to tense the muscle, hold it and then release, or push against something. This can be done with weights, or by pushing against a wall.  It can also be done with a stretchy exercise band (very inexpensive).  You can even use canned food or a large book for weights if you don't have any.
  2. Increase flexibility.  This comes from stretching before and after you exercise.  Take a lesson from cats.  They stretch between each phase of their day.  This comes naturally.  They are very limber animals.  You need to be limber too, to protect yourself from injuries.  This warms up and cools down your muscles.
  3. Develop endurance - Walk, ride a bike or swim.  You will improve the fitness of your heart and lungs. Jogging and running are ok too, but only if you have built up to them gradually. 

That is it; muscle strength, flexibility and endurance.  Work on these 3 to start.  From there you can decide what diet advice will be the best for you.

Remember though, as well as finding out how to get those washboard abs, be sure to do the other parts to a successful program:  Endurance training and stretching.  That way you will last longer, and you won't end up quitting because of boredom or injuries.   Dieting can be more easily started when you feel ready, once you are in the habit of exercising.
