Any gym trainer will tell you that it is very important to stretch after exercising. Stretching lessens the likelihood of future injury. It also lowers the level of pain or discomfort that tends to develop a day or two later in muscles that are not usually used.
Kids exercise may not be as intense as exercise for adults, but it is still necessary that children stretch well after each time they exercise. Since a child's muscles aren't fully developed, they may be more prone to injury. Stretching is sure to help prevent that.
The best way to stretch is to focus on each major muscle group for approximately 20-30 seconds. Have your kids steadily hold each stretch without bouncing. When they bounce it doesn't stretch the muscles as effectively and it could also be painful. The whole stretching process should take 10 minutes or less.
Stretching is good for kids in other ways. Other than preventing future injuries, stretching helps children develop range of motion and flexibility. It's also a good time to cool down and help them relax after being wound up from the exercise.
After your child exercises the muscles are loose and warm, making stretching easier. This is why it should be done after exercising instead of before.
It doesn't hurt, though, to do a few warm-ups before exercising, especially if they're playing a sport or will be involved in another intense exercise for a period of time. Some examples of warm-ups before exercise include: running in place, light jogging, riding a bike and calisthenics. Calisthenics include movements like jumping, bending, swinging, twisting or kicking and are meant to increase body strength and flexibility.
It's easy for kids to finish exercising and immediately sit on the couch to rest or go do something else. As the parent, you have to make sure they're stretching properly. Tell them the importance of stretching and do it with them so they'll know the proper way. Be the model for your kids.
If your child is involved in an organized sport, most likely the coach will have them stretch at the end of a game. Just make sure the child understands that they should do the same any time the exercise off the field.
Stretching and kids exercise go hand in hand. Stretching makes exercise safe for children and adults and it should always be included when engaging in any physical activity.
