If you look in many of the magazines and periodicals this day and
age, all of the health and fitness ones are continually pushing the
benefits of weight training. However, from what I've seen, most people don't really know how to weight train. Weight Training 101 First
and for most, make sure to use enough weight. If you can do 20 reps
with a certain weight, it's not heavy enough. This applies to both men
AND women. In my experience, many women aren't seeing the results
they deserve simply because they aren't using enough weight. The whole
"high reps/low weight" mentality is an old theory that just doesn't
apply any more. Learning how to weight train properly also means
using proper form. In contrast to the people that don't use enough
weight, we have another set of people that use TOO MUCH weight. These people continually have to "cheat" to get the weight up, which can cause injury and other types of problems. For
most people, how to weight train means using a weight that you can do
around 8 reps with. Typically, this rep range causes the body to do the
most work (in the physics sense) and therefore burns the most calories
in the process. One caveat... if you are trying to learn how to
weight train, don't just copy what someone else is doing. Most people
weight train the wrong way so you'll only be copying someone else's
mistakes. Get some professional help if at all possible. It's
well worth the initial investment and will keep you from many road
blocks down the road. In conclusion, learning how to weight train properly takes a little discipline, but is well worth the effort in the long run. |
