Exercise Decision Time - At the Gym Or Home?
By Trevor R. Price

To truly meet your fitness goals, you will need to do a little planning to ensure your success. One of the single most important decisions you make will involve whether you are going to do your workout at the gym or at home.

To make the best decision, give considerable evaluation to your options.

What are Your Options?

As you can imagine, working out at home has a variety of advantages - not the least of which being overall cost.

A gym membership can be costly - not to mention the gas you must buy simply to travel to and from the gym - as well as the time you have to invest in traveling that you could be committing to an actual exercise routine from home.

On the other hand, if you are willing to invest in a gym membership, you will generally have access to top-of-the-line exercise equipment and even personal trainers.

Additionally, if you opt for a gym membership, most experience the motivation - if not momentum - of other fellow patrons. You can even avail yourself of classes and other exercise groups that may encourage you stay on track.

Pros and Cons

Of course, not everyone finds working out in front of strangers motivating - in fact, some find the idea terrifying.

And while plenty of people do take advantage of all the amenities a gym has to offer, others end up paying for access to programs and equipment that they will never use. The gym, for example, could be so far out of the way that it is totally impractical.

On the other hand, working out properly at home is not absolutely free. If you are just getting started, you will need to invest in equipment and instructional materials to work out properly.

Though it can be mortifying to work in front of strangers, if you are working out alone you won't have any feedback or the same motivation as in a group setting.

Making the Best Choice

To make the best choice for your personal situation, you simply need to be realistic and honest with yourself.

If you can't afford going to a gym or if you know you lack the motivation to get yourself there regularly, you are probably better off working out at home where it is less expensive over time and where you can also exercise at your convenience.

Alternatively, if you know you perform better with support (or a little pressure), then a gym environment may be better for you.

Likewise, if you strongly desire access to expensive equipment or such amenities as a pool or childcare, you will probably get more bang for your buck by doing your exercising at a gym.

It's a tough call, but don't make the mistake of paralyzing yourself with indecision. At least go with one - you can always change your mind later.
